Emily Fredricks
Emily was kind, funny, loving and creative. She was the sunshine of our lives. She was
killed tragically, traumatically and her death was preventable. She was the best of the
five of us. There are no words to describe the sadness that we feel.
Emily was killed on November 28, 2017, at the corner of Spruce and 11 th Streets in
Philadelphia. She was cycling to work as a French pastry chef when the driver of a
private sanitation truck killed her. He was not held accountable in any way. Emily was
24 when she was killed.
We are co-founders of Families for Safe Streets Philadelphia. Rich and Laura moved
from New Jersey to Massachusetts in 2020, and are also members of Families for Safe
Streets Massachusetts. We started foundation in Emily’s honor, and this foundation
gives scholarships in Emily’s memory and supports many safe streets organizations.
We miss Emily every second of every day.
